PORTUGAL - MOREIRA DE CÓNEGOS - RESTAURANTE S. GIÁO
RESTAURANTE S. GIÁO
Another trip across the Portuguese border. This time to Moreira de Cónegos, between Braga and Porto, and in the countryside near Guimaraes.
Not the easiest place to find, even with a sat nav. When you do you will see no name on the outside of a building which could be mistaken for a workshop.
After walking around the building we find the un-named entrance door and walk into the very pleasant surprise of a stunning traditionl Portuguese setting.
The large windows in the open dining room offer views across to the restaurant's local vinho verde vineyards and the green surrounding mountainside.
You can also the the local football pitch.
Excellent traditional cooking takes place in this country restaurant with a wood oven in the centre of the dinning room and famous for its own smoked products.
The menu is excellent and the chef, Pedro Nunes, is permanently updating it with new dishes. It has a nice wine cellar that you can visit by request, and choose the very reasonably priced wine for your meal.
Try.....
Home smoked salmon
Morcela de arroz (Black pudding with rice)
Ovos rotos (broken eggs)
Sopa de peixe (fish soup)
Tripas (tripe)
Cabrito (oven-roasted leg of kid goat)
Bochechas de porco (pork Cheeks)
Bacalhau (codfish)
Bife de filete (fillet steak)
Have the house flan for dessert
Make a reservation if you want to be sure you get a table.
Service is friendly, and helpful.
Closed Monday, and Sunday dinner.
To help find the restaurant it is opposite this monstrosity
