ANTIGUA CASA DE GUARDIA

After a visit to the Mercado Central de Atarazanas (Málaga's local food market, which also has excellent tapas bars), a short walk will take you to the oldest bar in Málaga, founded in 1840. 

Here, they mainly sell Málaga sweet wine directly from the barrel.

It is a typical spit and sawdust, old-fashioned drinking bar, and is great fun. 

It's like stepping back in time to one of the few places in Málaga that still maintains its atmosphere.

Try the pajarete, a famous Málaga wine, It is usually a monovarietal of Pedro Ximénez. You can have it from the bottle or directly from the barrel. It smells a little strange, but that's part of its charm.

The wine quality relation is excellent. Prices shown are per litre but all are served in small size small glasses so the most expensive one we saw was around €2 per glass.

Your bill is chalked up on the bar.

You will find Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel.

As well as lesser-known Málaga wines like Málaga Quina and Seco Anejo.

Even Mallorca.

Vermut (vermouth) is also a good choice.

While you can order food, which is ok, there are much better options nearby.

It is a perfect pit stop before wandering around the city centre or before heading back home. 

It can get very busy in the summer, so it is best to get there when it opens.

The staff are great & know their stuff, which has made it a must if you visit Málaga.
