IBIZA - SES SALINAS - CAN SALINAS MANUEL EL REY DE LA FIDEUÀ

CAN SALINAS MANUEL EL REY DE LA FIDEUÀ

To find this restaurant, head past the church on the way to Ses Salinas. It is on the left before the Platja des Cavallet turnoff, just before Salinas Beach.

This family-run restaurant serves excellent Valencian-style paella and fideuà away from the busy summer crowds of Ibiza.

Fideuà is a dialectal pronunciation of the Valencian or Catalan word fideuada (which means a large number of noodles). It is a seafood dish originally from the coast of Valencia, similar to paella (paella is the name of the pan it is cooked in) and even more to arròs a banda, but with noodles instead of rice.

The main ingredients are small pasta noodles (usually like macaroni or fideo’s (thin, like spaghettini, 15mm long, which come in various thicknesses), firm fish, cuttlefish, squid and shellfish (prawns, langoustines, lobster, mussels). It is seasoned mainly with lemon.

These famous paellas and fideuà dishes are made traditionally. This is a very characterful spot in Ibiza, under the trees and with a stunning sunset view of ses Salinas in the evening.

It is a nice place to stop on your way to ses Salinas beach and its famous chiringuitos like Sa Trinxa and Jockey Club for lunch (they close at 5 pm), and very reasonably priced. (paellas are from €20pp).

I suggest having a late lunch there, slightly before sunset, to enjoy the sun's colour and watch the flamingos on the salt plains of Ses Salinas, opposite the restaurant. As we had fideuà on our previous visits, we decided on rice dishes for this time.

To start, we had the ever-present pan con alioli.

Followed by Arròs negro, which

contains squid ink, cuttlefish and prawns and is startingly black.

Then, a traditional paella de Marsico (seafood paella)

containing gambas, cigalas, calamares, and mejillones (prawns, langoustines, squid and mussels).

Followed by a traditional Valencian paella of chicken, rabbit, flat green beans and butter beans.

The wines are good, and the service is friendly and efficient but not over the top.

These dishes can be a little high in salt, but that is the traditional way, and, of course, you are opposite the famous Salinas salt plains, after all! Apart from the rice and noodle dishes, there seems to be a more upmarket list of starters than before, most of which looked very good.

For dessert, we had tarta de queso caseros (homemade cheesecake).

Torrija de la Yaya.

Piña asada con helada.

Tarta de frutos rojos.

Reservations are required.

This is Ibiza; this is life.

Open 1st April - 30th September
